Five Summer Getaways Every Kid Should Experience!!

Wow! I cannot believe this school year is ending. I only have one more full day with my kinderkids. This school year has been one of the best ever!! Many of my parents have asked for tips for fun and educational things to do this summer. Here is my list of my top five summer getaways. (It was really hard to limit it to just five.)

1.Go to the zoo. Most people have a zoo within driving distance. It always saddens me to see how many of my students have never been to the zoo. Seeing the look on a child's face the first time they see an elephant is priceless! Check the schedule for feeding times. Sometimes, children even get to help. There are many chances for learning about animals before and after your trip. The writing opportunities are endless.

2. Take an overnight trip to Grandma's house. With busy schedules, most families are taking day trips. Staying up late and baking cookies are just a few of the highlights. Bedtime stories read by grandparents are the best! Who can forget the wonder of actually spending the night with Grandma?

3. Visit a State Park and pack a picnic lunch. There are several within driving distance where we live. Some even have cabins for rent, so you can turn that day trip into an overnight experience. Camping at state parks is fun too! Just plan to explore and enjoy nature at its finest! Picnic lunches ALWAYS taste better! Just won't forget to wear comfortable shoes and to pack both sunscreen and insect repellent!!

4. Find a drive-in movie! Okay, I am old and old-fashioned. These DO still exist and if you can't find one, make your own! One of our local churches sponsored one a week during the summer. This is great family fun!

5. Since I teach, I have to include your local library. Visit it often! Do not forget to check for their summer reading program. They usually offer great activities and incentives for reading. Keeping a log of books read during the summer is a sure-fire way to impress next year's teachers.

The most important thing is to get away! remember every trip does not need to be elaborate or expensive. It really doesn't have to be well-planned. Often, the most remembered and fun trips are those taken on the spur of the moment.

Have fun, be safe and make memories!! ......and don't forget the camera!!

Getting Ready for Kindergarten

As a kindergarten teacher, I am often asked by parents, friends and family how to prepare your special little one for the big day. Next week, I will start my 33rd year of teaching. here are some of my tips.

1. Meet the teacher. Most school have an open house to let parents and students see the classroom and meet the teacher. If you are unable to attend, call the school and ask if there is another time available. Most teachers know how important this is and will try to accommodate you if at all possible!

2. Involve your child in shopping for school supplies. Let your child have a say in picking out bookbags, journals etc.

3. Go to the library or bookstore! There are many wonderful books about kindergarten. Al Greven's book, Rules for School is a wonderful place to start.

4.
Start going to bed early about a week before school starts. This will
help prevent the "I'm not ready for bed" scene that can cause stress.

5.
Try not to let your stress show! Especially if your new kindergarten
student is your oldest or youngest, this will be an adjustment for you
as well as your child. Young children will sense your uneasiness and
will add it to theirs!

My final piece of advice is one
that I always share with my parents. " I promise NOT to believe
everything your child says happens at home if you promise NOT to
believe everything your child says happens at school!!

I wish you and your child a wonderful year with a caring teacher and loads of learning!

Inspirational Zingers Jumble

I love puzzles! I inherited the love for them from my Mom. She always did the daily crossword puzzles in ink! Now, I'm not nearly that good! I usually stick to the word searches. When I had the chance to review Inspirational Zingers Jumble published by Tyndale House, I jumped at the chance.
I was hoping that the name "inspirational" would include more Biblical puzzles. While some of them are, most are not. It does include a wide variety of quotes that make a person sit back and reflect.
The jumbles themselves are fun and challenging! I haven't "cheated' yet but I have asked my husband for help when I am stumped. (Usually though, just asking for his help triggers the answer. I hate to lose!!) The answers are included in the back of the book. I love the Super Jumbles and the Criss-Cross Jumbles. Christopher Hudson and Megan Chrans have done a good job with these.
I would recommend this to anyone who like word puzzles. It is small enough to be taken with you in the car or on an airplane to help fill the time. My father-in-law loves these types of puzzles. I will definitely pick up a copy for him.

The Heart Mender

This week I had the opportunity to read The Heart Mender by Andy Andrews. I have read The Noticer and I was looking forward to reading this book. I was not disappointed!

The Heart Mender is about Helen who is overcome with anger after losing her husband to the Nazi war machine. She is put to the test when Lt. Josef Landermann, officer on a German U-boat, washes on the shore near her home and his life lays in her hands. Does she give into her anger? Or is she able to overcome and help someone who needs her for survival?

The story deals with forgiveness. If you or someone you know has a hard time dealing with this, then this is the book for you!

The historical part of the book was fascinating. I did not realize how little I knew about WWII and the impact it had here in the United States geographically. I was even able to teach hubby a thing or two!

I recommend this book for anyone who needs help dealing with forgiveness, any history buffs or anyone who just enjoys a great love story!

I landed my first teaching job by speaking from my heart.

In my first and only interview, I told my principal how I had felt a deep desire to become a teacher since childhood. I spoke about days playing and pretending to be a teacher. I revisited days when I had instructed children I was babysitting as students in a classroom, and I discussed how I had turned my bedroom into a classroom as well. I explained how I had always enjoyed working with young children in my church, and I shared how I knew that becoming a teacher was a part of God’s plan for my life.

Again, I spoke from my heart as I answered questions about possible solutions to particular situations.

I remember being very nervous about discussing educational issues, but I also knew I had to be very honest. The principal looked at my college transcripts and recommendations and was pleased. I told her very honestly how I knew the best experience would actually begin when I became a teacher in my own classroom. We discussed the importance of being a part of a team and learning from each other. I shared how very interested and excited I was about having my own classroom, and how I was equally excited about the wonderful opportunities I would have to learn from other teachers in the school.

I knew I wanted to be an inspiration to my students. I wanted to be someone they could love, respect, and trust. I knew that I would need to teach and model all of the expected behaviors I would like to see in my students.

My first interview went very well, and I was delighted when I found out the next day I had landed my first teaching job.

I landed my first teaching job by being myself.

I had just graduated college and moved 740 miles away from everyone I had ever known. I

desperately needed a job not only for financial reasons but also to make new friends. I enrolled

my son in a local Christian school and heard that they needed a 1^st grade teacher. I knew that working in the same school as my only child would be perfect since we had no family to help me with him.

I entered the front office with confidence and looked the secretary in the eye and said, “I understand that you have a position available and I‘d like to leave my resume.” She said that there was a position available and she glanced over my resume. I asked her if I could speak to the Head Master about the position. She stepped over to his office and motioned me to the door. As I entered the door I made up my mind that I wasn’t leaving that office without the job. He asked me inside and we began the interview. I was nervous but tried not to show it. I answered his questions with confidence, without dragging out the conversation and blubbering on about college. I spoke about my actual classroom training. I did mention that I was new but elaborated on my experience with children. I also expressed my desire to be mentored by those with wisdom and experience. Forty-five minutes later I walked out of that office as the new 1^st grade teacher.

Be yourself! What I showed the Head Master that day was that I was confident but not cocky, sincere and willing to learn from others, and that I wanted to put the education of children first!

Beth is married to Andy. She has 2 sons - Spencer and Reece. She graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin. She teaches 5 year old kindergarten. She enjoys singing in her church choir.

How to land a Teacher Job

I landed my first teaching job by not being afraid to take a chance.

In 1977, I graduated from college with a degree in Early Childhood Education. I was only 20 years old and was engaged to be married that December.

My fiancee was working part time and still attending college full time. It was critical that I find a job. Kindergarten was my first love but there were no job openings in either of the small towns where we were raised.

I interviewed in a near by even smaller town. (The town had one caution light - not even a stoplight!) The school system did not have a very good reputation.

My first interview was at the district level. I thought that everything had gone pretty well. But then I was told that the only kindergarten job was in the one place I had heard so many negative things about. I decided to check it out anyway.

What a blessing! The interview with the principal was wonderful. When I walked in the classroom, I knew that I was 'home'. The school was K-3. I was THE kindergarten teacher . There were two classes of the other grades.

I learned so much from the other teachers there. They all took the new teacher under their wings and molded me into the teacher I am today. I taught there for ten years. I only left after my first child was born and I was offered a job where I live.

I occasionally run into students I taught there. The memories are wonderful. I will always cherish my time there and all I learned - from my students and the other staff members.
So, if the job feels right in your heart, take it. Do not let what others say influence what your heart tells you.

Hope for Education

I am a teacher. I have been a teacher longer than I have been a wife, longer than I have been a mother. I have been teaching for 32 years. Why am I still teaching? I teach because I have hope. Hope for young students and hope for the future of education.
I teach kindergarten. I love my job. For me, instilling in my students the joy of reading is my main goal. I want each student to share the same love of reading that I have. Every time I see excitement in their eyes when they realize they are reading, I have hope for the future.
